Assertiveness for Managers
2 Day Course
Course Objectives:
 

To enable individuals to: £1300 per day for up to 8 delegates

  • recognise the effects of different management styles
  • use these styles appropriately
  • communicate effectively with team members
  • assert themselves with their team and with their manager
  • ask for what they want and learn to say "no" assertively
  • prevent difficult situations occurring
  • respond effectively when difficult situations occur in their team
  • balance the rights of the individual with organisational needs

  • Management styles

  • recognising different managerial styles
    advantages/disadvantages of each style
    using the styles effectively
     

  • Assertiveness defined

  • understanding the difference between:
    aggressive, passive and assertive behaviour
    appreciating the effect of these behaviours
     

  • Managing the new team member

  • asserting yourself with your team
    realising the importance of setting and agreeing performance standards
    giving clear, precise instructions
    asking for what you want
    being fair and reasonable
    balancing the rights of your staff, your needs and those of the organisation
     

  • Preventing problems in your team

  • recognising the cause of various problems
    taking steps to avoid them
    dealing with problems objectively
     

  • Communicating positively

  • learning and using a 4-step model
    working towards a win-win solution
    being objective and not subjective
    understanding your team's perspective
     

  • Giving feedback effectively

  • giving effective feedback in difficult situations eg
    - the team member who is late
    - absent team members
    - the team member who resents your promotion
    - the team member who is not 'pulling their weight'
    developing fair, workable solutions
     

  • Managing underperformance

  • giving feedback to the underperformer
    gaining acceptance that the underperformance is unacceptable
    getting to the cause of the problem
    agreeing what performance standard is required in the future
    getting commitment from the team member to improve future performance
     

  • Saying "No" without causing resentment

  • unreasonable staff requests
